John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)

John Greenleaf Whittier Our School was named for, John Greenleaf Whittier, the most outspoken abolitionist among poets of his generation. His first collection of poems dealing with the evils of slavery was published in 1837. John G. Whittier wrote and spoke constantly about the importance of ending slavery, and lived to see the successful conclusion of the abolitionist movement that he had championed throughout his lifetime.
